IMPAC3T-IP is working on how to respond and proactively engage with the changing face of intellectual property (IP) licensing. The focus is on the shift from traditional licensing practices towards more inclusive models that can deliver broader societal impact. This evolution is captured in what IMPAC3T-IP, and we as partners to the initiative, are defining as the Classical Plus scenario.
As funding bodies and policymakers emphasise the importance of societal and environmental benefits from research, the demand for a broader approach has become clear. The Classical Plus scenario looks at this new direction in licensing, expanding beyond patents to include copyrights, know-how, and other valuable research assets. This includes a wider range of outputs, such as digital libraries, geographical datasets, and social science research tools, which can bring immense value both at economic and social levels.
Classical Plus supports sustainable business models such as Creative Commons licensing and freemium strategies. This inclusive framework encourages collaboration and ensures ongoing research impact.
